What to Expect at Your First Ceramics Class in Brussels

Booking your first ceramics class in Brussels can feel like a small leap. Will you be the only beginner? Do you need to bring anything? What if your bowl comes out wonky? The short answer: relax — a beginner ceramics workshop is one of the most forgiving, low-pressure ways to spend an afternoon. Here's what actually happens from the moment you walk in.

You don't need any experience

Almost everyone at a public workshop is a first-timer. There's no audition, no skill test, and no expectation that you've touched clay before. Our teacher walks the whole group through each step, so you're never left guessing. Curiosity is the only prerequisite.

The shape of the session

A typical "Fall in Love with Clay" workshop runs about two and a half hours and follows a simple rhythm:

  1. A short welcome — introductions, a hot drink, and an overview of what you'll make.
  2. About an hour of making — you'll hand-build a plate, bowl, or mug, shaping the clay with your hands and a few simple tools.
  3. A break — chat, stretch, and grab a free non-alcoholic drink.
  4. About an hour of painting — decorate your piece with colour and pattern.

By the end you'll have a finished object that is unmistakably yours.

What to wear and bring

Just bring yourself. All materials, tools, and aprons are provided. Clay is washable, but wear something you don't mind getting a little dusty, and keep your nails short if you can — it makes shaping easier. Everything else is on us.

Taking your piece home

This is the one part that surprises newcomers: you usually don't leave with your piece the same day. With fired, food-safe clay, your work needs to be glazed and fired in the kiln, so it's ready to collect at the studio about four weeks later. If you choose an air-dry clay session, you can take your piece home immediately (though it won't be food-safe). Either way, you walk away having made something real.

Where we are

The studio is at Rue Rossini 19 in Anderlecht — a five-minute walk from Gare du Midi and metro Clemenceau, and easy to reach from Ixelles, Saint-Gilles, Forest, and the city centre.
